Osceola Velo Club History

Original Club Racing Jersey -- 1998
  Early Years

The Osceola Velo Club was established in January of 1998 by USCF Cat 4 road racer and USCF Certified Cycling Coach Pat Schlager in order to give road bicyclists in the Kissimmee/St. Cloud (Osceola County), FL area the opportunity to be introduced to and participate in the sport of bicycle road racing.

In its first year of existence, the club, at that time called the Osceola County Cycling Club, was registered with the USCF, the governing body for bicycle road and track racing in the USA.  After that first year, the club has continued as an unaffiliated road racing club with its members competing as "unattached" racers in USA Cycling-sanctioned events.

Second Coming

After some lean years, interest in the club was renewed in 2005.  Its name was changed to the Osceola Velo Club, and founder/coach Pat Schlager became a USA Cycling Licensed Level 3 Coach.

2006 saw the designing and ordering of custom club racing jerseys, and the establishment of this website.  Coach/racer Pat Schlager was the first member of the Osceola Velo Club to score Florida Points Series (FPS) points in 2007, with additional racing members scoring FPS points in the following seasons.

Branching Out

In October 2010, Osceola Velo Club's founder/coach Pat Schlager, relocated back to his home town of Lawrence, KS and began to recruite local riders/racers in order to establish a Northeast Kansas chapter of the club.  Unfortunately, without the guiding presence of the club's founder and coach, the original Central Florida chapter desolved in 2011 after 13 years of "teaching the ropes of bicycle road racing" to the "newbies."

Plenty of success for Osceola Velo Club members in Kansas, though.  Coach Pat has made the podium his home at the Kansas State Track Championships.  He and other club members have won State Championships on the road, track, and in cyclo-cross; various Points Series both on the road and in cyclo-cross; and even a top-ten finish in the National Track Championships; thus making Osceola Velo Club a very well-rounded and successful bicycle racing club.
